Upon arrival at Kigali international airport, you’ll be met by a Safari Chapter representative and transferred to your hotel. Peacefully nestled along picturesque hilltops, Kigali is a thriving African city notable for its cleanliness, orderliness, and hospitality. 

Overnight in Kigali Serena (DBB) “OR similar”

In the heart of Kigali, Kigali Serena Hotel is close to Union Trade Center and Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre. This 5-star hotel is within the vicinity of Kigali Convention Centre and Stade Amahoro.

Early start to the Akagera national park. It covers an area of 1,200 km² in the east of Rwanda, is set at a relatively low altitude on the border with Tanzania, Akagera national park could scarcely be more different in mood to the breezy cultivated hills that characterize much of Rwanda. Dominated scenically by the labyrinth of swamps and lakes that follow the meandering course of the Akagera River, the most remote source of the Nile, this is archetypal African savannah landscape of tangled acacia woodland interspersed with open grassland.

Akagera is, above all, big game country! As well as being home to the shy oribis and to the elusive Topi, the Highlands afford a breathtaking view across the undulating hills, rolling grassland to the extensive series of lakes, linked by papyrus swamps. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck are some of the game roaming this peaceful heaven. The bird life is also remarkable. The diverse habitats of the area are home to over 500 species of birds.

Arrive the Ruzizi tented camp in time for lunch.

Wakeup call at 6am with a coffee ready to go for the morning game drive from south to north. During the game drive along a well-designed network of tracks, there are plenty of animals one can see including elephants, buffalo, zebra, bush baby, antelopes and many other mammal species. On rare occasions, one can see species such as leopard, lion and black rhino. As one of the most scenic savanna in East Africa, the game drive in Akagera provides an opportunity to see gentle hills blending in beautifully with lowland swamps and water bodies. Overnight into the park. ​

After lunch, we take a walk in the park popularly known as “Walk in the line”.

Experience what fence attendants go through to ensure the Akagera biodiversity is protected and conserved but walking along a 120km fence on a daily basis. The walk starts at the park entrance taking you 7km into the hills following the fence on the outer side of the park. The walk takes on average 2 hours and ends at the top of the Ridge with spectacular views of Akagera in all directions.

Return to the lodge for overnight – Ruzizi tented camp (LDBB) “OR similar”

Leave early morning towards Kigali. Follow the road as it winds through some of the many hills. Lunch in Kigali. Continue towards Lake Kivu with stops on the route, visiting Ndaba waterfall on the way. Lake Kivu is the largest lake with its 2. 699 km² and is divided between Congo and Rwanda. The lake lies at an altitude of 1. 459 m and is the highest in Africa. This famous lake is one of a string of huge freshwater lakes which lie along Africa’s Great Rift Valley. It’s one of Africa’s Great Lakes and is the deepest freshwater lake in the world. Surrounded by the Rift Valley and Virunga mountains, it has picturesque sandy shores and provides a beautiful setting to relax.

The Congo Nile Trail walking journey is an all-inclusive spectacular walk from the southern shores of Lake Kivu to the northern shores through the famous Congo Nile divide watershed. To walk the entire trail takes 10 days, but for this itinerary 2 days are fine. Unlike any other walk, the scenery is geographically spectacular and ever changing – villages on top of hills, rivers, waterfalls, reefs, lakes and sandy beaches. The experiences are diverse: walking, community interaction, historical tales, a magnificent scenic walk along Lake Kivu shores and a landscape of a thousand hills. 

This morning you have to wake up early as you have will have to drive for 1 hour from your hotel to Bumba, then hike for a minimum of 6 hours to get to Kinunu, then onwards to Cyimbiri. Following the trail between community fields, crossing the river Coko before getting to Kibingo Health Center. Picnic lunch nearby the Gatunga village (commercial center, with market on Tuesday), and the climb the trail until the main Rubavu.  Overnight on the shores of Lake Kivu. ​± 6 hours walking

Today we will concentrate on adventure activities around lake Kivu. Activities include Water sports along Lake Kivu

Water sports is so common along Lake Kivu since there are many water activities that can be engaged in by the holiday makers. Some of these include; water skiing, wind surfing, wind surfing, paddling and enjoying a motor boat on the lake. Fishing is also a common activity on Lake Kivu.

Hiking and Biking around Lake Kivu

Hiking and biking alongside the shores of Lake Kivu is perfect for many holiday makers. The hikes can be one to half day as well as nature walks. Tourists can be able to venture out the new developed Nile Congo trails, village visits and cultural interactions, hence getting an enticing experience. Climbing and biking of hills around is the lake is also a common activity.

Depending on the weather, we will hike in the morning and kayaking in the afternoon.

Early morning transfer to Volcanoes National Park and check in at the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge. This will be our base for Gorilla trekking the next day. 

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is located in Kinigi in northern Rwanda and on the edge of the Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas.

The lodge is located on the foothills of the Mount Karisimbi, one of the volcanic mountains that make up the Virunga Massif. The lodge is about 10 minutes’ drive to the main entrance of the Volcanoes National Park where gorilla trekking starts.

Early in the morning after a hearty breakfast, we will be led to the trek start point at the park gate. Gorilla Trek.

Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is best known for mountain gorilla trekking, but the park is also rich with many other exotic activities for one to take on. This Park is part of the Virunga volcanoes which are shared between Uganda, Rwanda, and DR Congo. This Park is an evergreen bamboo forest with grassland areas, swamp, and heath in other areas.

The mountain gorillas are the prime attraction in volcanoes national park with gorilla trekking happening all year round. Because of the high altitude it is generally cold, especially early morning and the evenings, you are advised to carry a light sweater for these times. The Park is located only 2 hours from Kigali in the north of Rwanda.

The unique opportunity to see gorillas in their natural habitat is unforgettable, some even say life changing. Encounters with gorillas as they go about their daily lives are carefully managed, with expert trackers and guides leading small groups of tourists up bamboo-covered slopes to spend a precious and awe-inspiring hour just a few feet away from the gentle creatures.

After the trek, we return to the lodge in time for lunch and spend the rest of the day at the lodge or with the community.

Overnight at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (LDBB) “OR similar”

In the morning after breakfast, we transfer by road to Nyungwe forest. We will check into Nyungwe Top view hotel which offers pretty good accommodation close to the park. 

Nyungwe top view hotel offers activities mainly centered around the park. So look forward to tracking chimpanzees, seeing he Ruwenzori Colobus monkey, birdwatching, forest walk, and going on the Nyungwe canopy walk. On this day we will do the canopy walk before arriving the lodge.

This is not only the place for relaxation but also one of the place for adventure and insight into Rwanda ‘s single beauty. This forest is the largest protected mountain forest in Africa that covers between 1600 and 2000 sq metres and being a five hour drive into the middle of Rwanda, this long drive to Nyungwe also gives the guests an opportunity to drink in the country’s diverse scenery and the imposing land scape as you move to the main attraction. Once you get to the park, you will then prepare to join on one of the most unbelievable adventures you will ever have, the canopy walk.

Enjoy during the early morning hours the peaceful atmosphere of the Nyungwe Forest. Return to Kigali.

Depending on your departure flight, you will enjoy exploring the great cultural activities – including genocide museum, meet the artists and their work at the dazzling Inema gallery, visit craft shop. Lunch and airport transfer.
