This safari brings you to one of the most interesting places in Rwanda: the rocky highlands and wet plains of Akagera national park, home to big African game. Take a walk along the shores of Lake Kivu, through the famous Congo-Nile Divide watershed. Then, you will track the endangered mountain gorilla on the slopes of the dramatic Volcanoes National Park.

Upon arrival at Kigali international airport, you’ll be met by a Safari Chapter representative and transferred to your hotel. Peacefully nestled along picturesque hilltops, Kigali is a thriving African city notable for its cleanliness, orderliness, and hospitality.

Early start to the Akagera national park. It covers an area of 1,200 km² in the east of Rwanda, is set at a relatively low altitude on the border with Tanzania, Akagera national park could scarcely be more different in mood to the breezy cultivated hills that characterize much of Rwanda. Dominated scenically by the labyrinth of swamps and lakes that follow the meandering course of the Akagera River, the most remote source of the Nile, this is archetypal African savannah landscape of tangled acacia woodland interspersed with open grassland.

Akagera is, above all, big game country! As well as being home to the shy oribis and to the elusive Topi, the Highlands afford a breathtaking view across the undulating hills, rolling grassland to the extensive series of lakes, linked by papyrus swamps. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck are some of the game roaming this peaceful heaven. The bird life is also remarkable. The diverse habitats of the area are home to over 500 species of birds.

Arrive the Akagera Game Lodge in time for lunch.

The lodge is a haven in the southern part of Akagera National Park. The lodge sits on a gentle ridge with breath-taking views of Lake Ihema and Lake Shakani. The lodge is located 5km from the southern entrance to Akagera National Park.

In the afternoon, we will take a boat ride on the lake Ihema, and an evening game drive.

During this amazing expedition, you will sail along the water edge, which is covered with several trees, drift past numerous giant hippos and see several crocodiles some in the shallows of the water and other basking on the shore.

In addition, you will see a number of water birds so serious birders will be able to identify a large number of birds.

Return to the lodge for overnight – Akagera Game Lodge (LDBB) “OR similar”

Wakeup call at 6am with a coffee ready to go for the morning game drive from south to north. During the game drive along a well-designed network of tracks, there are plenty of animals one can see including elephants, buffalo, zebra, bush baby, antelopes and many other mammal species. On rare occasions, one can see species such as leopard, lion and black rhino. As one of the most scenic savanna in East Africa, the game drive in Akagera provides an opportunity to see gentle hills blending in beautifully with lowland swamps and water bodies. ​

After lunch, we take a walk in the park popularly known as “Walk in the line”.

Experience what fence attendants go through to ensure the Akagera biodiversity is protected and conserved but walking along a 120km fence on a daily basis. The walk starts at the park entrance taking you 7km into the hills following the fence on the outer side of the park. The walk takes on average 2 hours and ends at the top of the Ridge with spectacular views of Akagera in all directions.

Have breakfast and then enjoy a morning game drive before returning to Kigali. Visit interesting spots, which may include the craft market or the Kigali Genocide Memorial. Afterward, depart for a 2-hour drive to Musanze. Arrive at Red Rocks Intercultural Exchange Center for lunch before joining the local brew makers to understand the process of brewing a local beer from bananas

Overnight on the shores of the Lake at The Garden Place Hotel (LDBB) “OR similar”

After breakfast, report to the park headquarters for your first experience endangered species in the Volcanoes National Park. The golden monkey trek is normally an easy trek that takes 1-2 hours. Later, visit the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Overnight at The Garden Place Hotel.

Volcanoes National Park is a national park in northwestern Rwanda. It covers 160 km2 (62 sq mi) of rainforest and encompasses five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountains, namely Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga and Sabyinyo. It borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. It is home to the mountain gorilla and the golden monkey, and was the base for the primatologist Dian Fossey

Return to the lodge for overnight, at The Garden Place Hotel (LDBB) “OR similar”

After an early morning breakfast, transfer to the park headquarters together with your packed lunch early enough to be briefed about the code of conduct while with the gorillas. Then, enter the forest in search of the gorillas, which may take 2-6 hours depending on the movement of the gorillas in the jungle. Meet and stay with the gorillas for a maximum of 1 hour. There are 10 Gorilla Groups in the Volcanoes National Park. In general, the park has a total number of about 380 mountain gorillas. The volcanoes national park is part of the wider Virunga mountain ranges spreading all the way to the Democratic Republic of Congo. About 500 mountain gorillas inhabit the Virunga range.

After early morning breakfast at the lodge, drive for 1 hour to Rubava to visit Lake Kivu and enjoy the morning breeze on the shores. Spend just 1 hour there, then get back on the road to proceed on your 4-5 hour drive to Nyungwe National Park with lunch en route. Overnight at Emeraude Lake Resort.

Emeraude Kivu Resort offers luxurious, comfortable and affordable accommodation. The resort is close to Nyungwe National Park, the Green Hills Tea Estate and its factory Shagasha, Cyamudongo Chimp’s Forest, Mashyuza Hotsprings, the Bugarama Valley amongst other attractions. When at the resort you will have the view of Nkombo and Gihaya Islands – home to most fishers on Lake Kivu.

Overnight at Emaraude Lake resort (LDBB) “OR similar”

Have a morning breakfast then head out on a trek to find chimpanzees in Nyungwe National Park. You will be entitled to a 1-hour stay on finding the chimpanzees. After doing the chimpanzee trek, head for lunch at the hotel. After lunch, go back to Nyungwe National Park for a canopy walk and return in the afternoon for dinner.

This is not only the place for relaxation but also one of the place for adventure and insight into Rwanda ‘s single beauty. This forest is the largest protected mountain forest in Africa that covers between 1600 and 2000 sq metres and being a five hour drive into the middle of Rwanda, this long drive to Nyungwe also gives the guests an opportunity to drink in the country’s diverse scenery and the imposing land scape as you move to the main attraction. Once you get to the park, you will then prepare to join on one of the most unbelievable adventures you will ever have, the canopy walk.

Enjoy during the early morning hours the peaceful atmosphere of the Nyungwe Forest. Return to Kigali. Depending on your departure flight, you will enjoy exploring the great cultural activities – including genocide museum, meet the artists and their work at the dazzling Inema gallery, visit craft shop. Lunch and airport transfer.
